The mother of six children and two stepchildren, Mary Ball doted on her youngest child, George Washington, who lost his father at age 11. George went on to enlist in the Continental Army and grew up to become the first president of the United States. “My mother was the most beautiful person I ever saw,” he once wrote. “All I am I owe to my mother.”
