<p>Republicans pushing the <a href="http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/07/18/1403401/-Republican-Legislation-Will-Permit-Companies-To-Fire-Single-Pregnant-Women?detail=facebook" target="_blank">First Amendment Defense Act</a> seem determined to undermine the rights of Solo Moms and same-sex couples. The legislation, developed to support those opposing same-sex unions on religious grounds, uses broad language that opens the door to widespread discrimination. By protecting those who believe sexual relations should take place between married men and women only, the legislation would prohibit the federal government from taking action against employers who, say, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/first-amendment-defense-act_55a7ffe6e4b04740a3df4ca1?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592" target="_blank">fire women for having children outside wedlock</a>. <p><strong><em>Shocker! Ted Cruz was </em>almost <em>the son of a <a href="https://esme.com/voices/perspectives/whats-a-solo-mom" target="_blank" class="wordlink">Solo Mom</a>!</em></strong></p><p>In a recent address at Liberty University, presidential hopeful Ted Cruz endeared himself to Solo Moms everywhere by noting that if his father hadn’t found Jesus, he would have abandoned Cruz and allowed him to have been raised by a single mom. Was he expecting a collective gasp? Time Out, Cruz: Single parenthood is <em>not</em> a fate worse than death!</p>
