Jeb Bush’s Scarlet Letter? An “F” in English Lit

He should feel ashamed, not Solo Moms

In his 1995 book Profiles in Character, Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush suggests restoring public shaming as a means of changing the “irresponsible sexual behavior” of unwed mothers. He even cities Nathanial Hawthorne’s masterpiece The Scarlet Letter to back up his beliefs. Take a Time Out and revisit the classics, Jeb: The book isn’t actually praising Puritanism. It’s condemning it!
