Laverne Cox: Free to Be Happy and Gorgeous

Profile of actress Laverne Cox

I’m sure you’ve seen the luminous Laverne Cox. You might even know that she was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black, that she graced the cover of Time magazine, and that she was named a Glamour magazine Woman of the Year in 2014.

But did you know that this fierce and compassionate advocate for the transgender community was raised by a Solo Mom?

In this inspiring video, filmed by L/Studio for the It Got Better Project, Cox describes her journey from a childhood marked by poverty, bullying, and the self-destructive belief that she needed to change who she was in order to be loved. Now she enjoys a life full of self-love, confidence, and open expression.

Get your tissues ready, though, because the way Cox describes the transformative love between a mother and her child is sure to bring tears to your eyes.
