Edie Falco: A Moment of Clarity, Then Motherhood

When Edie Falco was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40, she vowed to stop waiting around for the perfect partner, the perfect apartment, or the perfect time to start a family on her own. After getting a clean bill of health from her doctors, Falco adopted a son in 2005 and a daughter in 2008. “I had one of those moments of clarity where all questions and debates just fall away,” she told O, The Oprah Magazine in 2009. But the woman people know and love as Carmela Soprano and Jackie Peyton wasn’t about to give up her career just because single motherhood entails “juggling a lot” and “working long hours,” as Falco told Working Mother magazine: “My work is a huge part of who I am. It’s how I experience the world, and it’s what makes me feel fulfilled. Yes, it costs them a little, but what my children get in return is a mother who is energized and content. It helps us to bring out the best in each other, which is what a family should do.”
