Solo Mom Linda Evangelista’s career as a model has spanned decades, unusual in an industry so focused on youth. But she seems to be the exception to the rule; at 50, Evangelista still regularly appears in magazines and ad campaigns, even as her own emphasis has expanded and changed. As she told Harper’s Bazaar magazine in 2013, “Motherhood is my whole life now. It’s the best. I am so fulfilled.”
Evangelista gave birth to son Augustin in 2006; the boy’s father, French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, is now married to actress Salma Hayek. When people express surprise at Evangelista’s maternal side, her response is matter of fact. As she told Harper’s Bazaar, “There are lots of things you don’t know about me. I do needlepoint, I do crochet, I cake-decorate.” Her days are also filled with crafting, playdates, and what she calls “boy things.” As she says, “Let’s just say I have a child who doesn’t like fashion. He wants jerseys. We watch sports and go to games.”
Like any working mom, Evangelista strives for balance. “Any time I spend with my son is ‘quality time,’ whether we are working on his homework or singing a song together,” she told Mail Online, the website of the Daily Mail, in 2014. “Every moment with him is amazing.”
Does she still think of herself as a supermodel? “You can call me whatever you want to call me,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “All I know is this: I’m still here.” And as she said to Mail Online, “The only advice I would offer young women today is what I say to my son every day. ‘You are beautiful, you are perfect.’”
