Top 10 Things to Remember If Your Child Is Arrested

Stay calm and keep these facts in mind

  1. Your child has the right to an attorney.
  2. Your child does not have to answer any questions.
  3. Your child is probably terrified.
  4. Your child has not been accused of a crime.
  5. Your child does not have to go to juvenile detention.
  6. Your child has a right to know the charges against him or her.
  7. Your child has a right to legal representation.
  8. There are two kinds of juvenile offenses: status offenses and delinquent acts.
  9. Juvenile court is serious business, so take it seriously.
  10. Be firm but respectful with police.
