Support for Solo Moms dealing with serious illness

Getting a cancer diagnosis can be devastating. As Solo Moms, caring for ourselves and our children during serious illness can be tough. Solo Moms must figure out how to talk to their children about their cancer diagnosis and what it means. They must undergo difficult treatments while still taking care of little ones. And sometimes there’s no shoulder to lean on during hard times.

In addition to being in the fight of their lives, many Solo Moms also have to fight just to keep up with household expenses and medical bills. In numerous cases, insurance only covers so much. And for many single moms, there are added expenses associated with treatment, such as new child-care and transportation costs or loss of work.

Several organizations are available to help Solo Moms get through this difficult time. They offer financial and other assistance to single parents facing cancer or who are parenting a young child with cancer. These programs operate nationally and have different eligibility criteria, so look them over carefully to see which one is right for you.

  1. CancerCare is national nonprofit organization that provides financial services and information for those dealing with cancer.
  2. Pediatric Oncology Resource Center has resources and information for parents of children with cancer.
  3. Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care is a nonprofit organization that provides leadership to advance the understanding and practice of patient- and family-centered care and promotes collaborative, empowering relationships among patients, families, and health-care professionals.

We’d also like to hear from you if you know of organizations that offer support to Solo Moms dealing with cancer. Singleton Moms in Arizona is one such place—stepping in to provide caring support to Solo Moms who are in active cancer treatment.
