It’s Really Not That Big a Deal

A boy explains his unique family to his future teacher

Dear Teacher,

I have an unusual family and that can sometimes pose challenges. I wanted to let you know about my family to avoid some awkward questions and so that you know what’s going on. I have two moms. They were never married (same-sex marriage wasn’t legal back then), but now they’re separated and raising me and my sister together, but separately.

Please try not to make a big deal out of it in class. It’s really not that big a deal, but sometimes other kids don’t see it that way. Even people who might be fine with same-sex parents, or a divorced mom parenting, sometimes think it’s weird when those things are combined. If other kids are wondering how a family like mine works, I’ll be happy to talk to them about it, but I’d rather not try to address it in front of the whole class. The same goes for kids who might make fun of me or use bad language when talking about it. I’ll talk to them first and come get you if I need help.

Both of my moms work busy schedules, so sometimes other people might pick me up from school. These might include my mom’s new girlfriend or my friend’s family. Please don’t call my mom’s girlfriend my mom, and don’t ask if my friend’s dad or brother is my dad. I was born with a donor, so I don’t have a dad at all. If you don’t know who someone is, just ask! I won’t mind, and it’s better to avoid confusion before it happens.

It might go without saying, but both of my moms are, in fact, my moms. They’re both equally my legal guardians. So they can both sign permission slips, call me in sick, go to parent-teacher conferences, etc. My sister and I live with both of them and split our time between their houses. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, my mom, or my mom.

Thanks,

Jacob
