SNAP is administered by the WV DHHR and governed by federal law and regulations of the US Department of Agriculture, Food Nutrition Services. The Program started in 1961 with issuance of the first food coupon in McDowell County, WV. SNAP provides monthly benefits to help eligible households buy food. Eligibility to receive benefits is based on household size, income, assets and some household expenses. The income and asset limits are determined by the federal government.

West Virginia's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program is WV WORKS. It is based on the goals of assisting economically dependent and at-risk families to become self supporting, enhancing the well-being of children, and on assisting families near the poverty level to remain self-sufficient. WV WORKS provides monthly cash assistance to eligible families. Most people who receive a monthly WV WORKS check also receive SNAP and Medicaid, but these are not guaranteed based just on receipt of a check.

PRIDE offers a multitude of programs geared at assisting low income individuals and families to move out of poverty and toward self sufficiency. Currently the agency operates Senior nutrition sites in Logan, Chapmanville and Millcreek; Head Start Centers in Logan, Chapmanville, Dehue, Lorado and Buffalo; and in conjunction with the Logan County Board of Education we operate specialized collaborative classrooms in several schools; Weatherization Program; CSBG Program; Child and Adult Food Care Program; Case Management and In-Home Care Programs.
