Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA)

Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA), Maryland’s Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, provides cash assistance to families with dependent children when available resources do not fully address the family’s needs and while preparing program participants for independence through work.To be eligible for TCA, a family must cooperate with child support, participate in work activities and comply with substance abuse provisions. Adults with dependent children applying for TCA must meet financial and technical eligibility requirements. Earned and unearned income cannot exceed the benefit level paid for the assistance unit size. Sanctions may be imposed for not complying with program requirements.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans, including elderly people, by providing them with emergency food assistance at no cost. In Maryland, TEFAP food is provided to the Maryland Food Bank and the Capital Area Food Bank, which in turn distribute the food to more than 650 local organizations, such as soup kitchens and food pantries that directly serve the public.
